This week in science, we investigated a question inspired by The Gingerbread Man story…
Would the Gingerbread Man have been safer swimming across the river or climbing onto the fox?
The children worked in groups to order the method before carrying out the investigation independently. They then poured water over their gingerbread men and observed what happened over time, recording changes every minute.
Using fantastic scientific vocabulary, the children noticed the gingerbread men becoming soggy, mushy, crumbly, soft and beginning to break apart. By the end of the experiment, many were completely unrecognisable!
To test their final idea, the children tried to put the gingerbread men back together again using a dry paper towel, but quickly discovered that once wet, they could not be fixed… although it did get very messy!
After discussing our results, we decided that The Gingerbread Man was definitely not waterproof, meaning swimming across the river would not have been a safe option!
To finish the lesson, the children had lots of fun pretending to be the fox and enjoyed eating some fresh gingerbread men of their own!
